Helen Keller was once asked, "What's the only thing worse than losing your sight?" Her response..."Losing your Vision." You may not realize it, but as a manager you must often serve as a navigator. You set the course for your sales team, or for your department. You set a course for yourself. You help your staff set their courses individually, and within the team context. You are constantly navigating. You map your territories, chart steps to take, sample the conditions, correct others who have strayed off course, and try to reach destinations determined for you, in large part, by the company. |

Many companies are under the false impression that the more benefits they offer their employees the happier they are. However, the increasing cost of healthcare, compensation, and training has companies re-evaluating their total benefit packages.
Hewitt Associates, a consulting firm in Lincolnshire, Illinois, has an online tool that companies can use to survey their employees. Results from recent surveys have shown that corporate America must continually prove to their stakeholders that the increasing cost of benefits is worth it. It has also shown that the difference between what companies spend on benefits and how employees value those benefits is growing larger every year. For example, many employees have responded to surveys indicating compensation is more important than health care benefits. Some are willing to trade compensation increases for restricted stock and/or bonuses. |

After the trials and tribulations that many early adopters of Windows Vista endured, the IT community at large has been anxiously awaiting a better alternative from Microsoft. The answer finally came on Jan. 9th at 3:00PM when the beta version of Windows 7 was released for public download. The response was much greater than Microsoft had anticipated. People from around the world began overwhelming servers to the point that Microsoft had to take them offline and postpone the event until capacity could be increased.

I am so excited about 2009! Yes, I know, there is a lot of negative talk about the economy, but to paraphrase something I read recently "I refuse to participate in the downturn" there are still plenty of companies making money and plenty of opportunity for them to leverage technology to advance their business.
So what about resolutions for 2009? We usually think about getting in shape (The gym has been packed the last few weeks!) volunteering more, all of these good things and I recommend them. However, my focus is technology in small business, so I'll give you a few that will help move your business forward in 2009: - I will get a secure firewall
- Backup my data and take it off site
- Create a backup & Recovery plan in case of fire, theft or other damage
- Hire someone to patch, monitor and maintain my Servers and Desktops
- Update my website
- Create an Acceptable Use Policy for my business
- Review my phone and Internet Access expenses
This is just seven, I could think of more but Rome wasn't built in a day, there is always 2010. Please call or email if you have any questions or comments! Mike

Lately there have been some rumors about discontent at LinkedIn. Problems with meeting financial goals set by their investors, rumors of managers throwing each other under the bus, lack of how to make LinkedIn profitable, and a host of other concerns. Could a site with 30+ million users just disappear in the blink of an eye?
If LinkedIn were gone tomorrow, how would that impact you today? In the future? I would guess that for a majority of the users it would seem devastating at first, but slowly they would come to relize that while LinkedIn was "cool" and showed "promise", they never really figured out how to use it. It would be business as usual in the world of face-to-face networking. |
